Tour 1: I&M Canal Locktender’s Tour

John Mellen, Locktender will board your coach to guide your group along the I&M Canal. Visit a locktender’s house and the oldest grain elevator along the I&M Canal as well as a lock and aqueduct on your way to the LaSalle Canal Boat. In LaSalle meet Larry and Moe, our famous mules who pull the replica canal boat, as you attend Mule Tending 101 and learn about these strong work animals. Spend an hour gliding quietly down the I&M on the LaSalle Canal Boat as you are entertained as if the year was 1848.

You won’t go hungry with mid-morning and mid-afternoon snacks and a hearty mule tenders lunch. Choose between homemade soup and sandwiches or stew and biscuits depending on the weather. Dessert is included and homemade. And of course we will add a shopping opportunity at the Lock 16 Gift Shop.

Tour 2: Lincoln & the I&M Canal Tour

Mary Todd Lincoln will board your coach to guide your group through several Lincoln related sites in LaSalle County. Visit a Lincoln Douglas debate site as well as other Lincoln related venues in Ottawa. In LaSalle visit the western end of the I&M Canal where Mr. Lincoln walked in 1848 between the canal boats and the river boats. Retrace an hour of the Lincoln family’s trip from Washington DC home to Springfield on the LaSalle Canal Boat. Mrs. Lincoln will share her courtship and wedding to Mr. Lincoln over lunch or tea.

Tour includes a snack and lunch including one of Mr. Lincoln’s favorite desserts. Choose between homemade soup and sandwiches or stew and biscuits depending on the weather. And of course enjoy shopping at the Lock 16 Gift Shop which includes Lincoln books, T-shirts, and other items.

Tour 3: Queen Victoria’s Tea & Sweets Tour

Spend the day sampling tea and sweets at a tea shop and the Lock 16 Café and Gift Shop. Learn the history of tea and how to make the perfect pot and cup of tea. Enjoy a tea lunch of freshly baked scones with clotted cream and jam, tea sandwiches, and sweets. Meet Queen Victoria, the mother of afternoon tea, and be entertained while she shares how she started the afternoon tea craze and a little bit about her life. Finish the day with a piece of DARLENA Artisan Chocolate and a glass of August Hill port or dessert wine.

Savor five pieces of artisan Chocolate created by Darlena Morgan, Chocolatier of Darlena Chocolates. You will be treated to her “Classic 5 Collection” of handcrafted chocolates using only imported Swiss chocolate and the purest ingredients. Experience history first hand on the LaSalle Canal Boat one-hour ride. See the architectural grandeur and hear the family stories at the Hegeler Carus Mansion. Walk through an amazing 10-room garden and cottage house with stories to tell at the Weber House and Gardens.

Tour 6: Outdoor History in the Starved Rock Area

Explore the outdoor history of the Starved Rock area with this fantastic day tour. Step back to 1848 to take a ride on the Illinois and Michigan Canal on the mule pulled LaSalle Canal Boat. Period-clothed guides and crew entertain you with stories of the historic I&M Canal. Meet one of our mules, Larry or Moe, and learn how horses and mules pulled passenger and cargo between Chicago and LaSalle. Then enjoy a Captain’s Lunch of homemade food at the Lock 16 Café. The buffet style lunch includes an entrée, potato, salad, soup, and dessert. Spend your afternoon on a guided hike at the scenic Starved Rock State Park. There are three options for hiking trails based up difficulty.
